the issue with AI music

suno sucks. aside from the obvious part of it being trained off stolen music, i’ve been trying to put into words why suno makes me simultaneously depressed and angry as an artist.

there’s a philosophy from writer Soetsu Yanagi:

“the beauty of an object is inseparable from the way it was made.”

and ultimately I think what annoys me about AI is that it replaces the artist’s process.

when you listen to a song, what you’re subconsciously doing is hearing all the decisions that an artist made. even if some of those decisions are accidental or mistakes… they could still be a beautiful thing. some of my favourite Beatles records are because of their human errors <3.

when we consume art that we love, we’re feeling all the things that went into creating it and if that’s not there then it’s hard to feel anything about it at all. if the way something is made is attached to what it is, AI basically removes that and makes the art un-enjoyable. this is also why if you like an AI song unknowingly and you find out after that is AI, it just kinda sucks now? like you feel like you got scammed.

give me the mistakes, give me the process, give me the raw, give me the struggle.

otherwise what’s the fucking point?
