forward is a pace

“forward is a pace!” i overheard a runner say this to their friend as they ran by me the other day. i like that. the 1 year anniversary of my last album i, sabotage, happened last week. i remember once i put this album out i felt a little lost. i think that’s pretty common after completing a bigger project (and honestly sometimes the reason why we’re hesitant to complete big things). queue the: what the fuck is next?

during this time, tegan had reached out for me to try some production for them, and that became our year. i really enjoyed writing outside of me, and this has always been something that i wanted to do, but i think was always unsure of how to get started. for some reason i put producing for other people on this imaginary pedestal. maybe there’s a part deep down that thinks, well if it goes poorly and it’s my song i’m only letting down myself. this would of course be the most cynical side of me and one that i try not to give any oxygen.

during this time, rêve had been sharing some of her music so i threw it out there that i’d be down to produce some stuff for her. she was really open to this idea. she sent me a playlist of some references and turns out we have a lot of music tastes in common. i became obsessive over the next few weeks making 3-4 beats a day for her sound. there was something freeing creating instrumentals for something outside my project and it was a really inspiring time.

rêve came to vancouver a few months later and we wrote lots of stuff. it felt simultaneously easy, fun and experimental. i think when both people in the room have similar tastes and saying “what if we did this” that becomes a really encouraging space to just create.

one of the songs we wrote during this time was called Church of Sound. it was one of the first beats i wrote for her that she was really excited about.

it’s out now, written by us, produced by me.

⛪️ Rêve has a very strong vision for her project, so the best way to hear the song for the first time would be to watch it with the music video. drop a comment if you have a moment. i know she’d love that.

forward is a pace!
