how i win my day

i have come to the conclusion that every day i must go to war with my phone. it’s the only way i have a shot at winning. a great day for me is running in the morning before i check my phone. i have been raw-dogging runs for about 3 years now and it’s freeing. it’s harder in cities i don’t know — like the one time i ran from New York to Brooklyn and ended up getting lost and had to ask someone for directions like it was the 90’s. but hey, that’s the price you pay on the quest for “good mental health.”

i think it’s naive to think phones aren’t destroying our brains. it actively makes me feel bad if i get stuck on it for longer than i wanted to. there’s a real self-loathing that accompanies being sucked down an instagram rabbit hole for 30mins when all you tried to do was check the weather.

the thing that ultimately bothers me though is no one says, “i’m bored” anymore. boredom is a great thing. no only does it push you to find creative ways to fill the time, but it also lets you bask in the unsettling charm of nothingningess. i think that’s why i like running so much these days, it’s not even the run, it’s the break from my phone where i just get to think about nothing and feel kind of bored. go team boredom!
