slowly chipping away

this morning i went for a run in the rain, which i quite enjoy. it’s a bit harder to get started, but more rewarding as you finish. i’ve been running with no real agenda lately, but keeping my weekly mileage around 25-30km. it’s a nice pocket where i feel active but never too sore.

the morning run has proven to be quite meditative. i get out there, no headphones, with the day’s goals sort of floating around in my head, and by the time i’m done i’ve organized what i need to do in a mental list. i also find this time to be very helpful in generating ideas. things often come to me that wouldn’t have otherwise.

the last thing about running that i enjoy, is it’s taught me to pay attention to my breathing a lot more. the metaphor has not been lost on me. i’m somewhat of a psycho where i always want to go-go-go and distance running has taught me to slow down. the effect this has had on my work has been really important. with distance running, if you want to run far, you need to build up to it. creative work is the same. you can’t do it all in one go, you have to chip away at it, building up to big moments.
